I've started to spend more time outside of the office with my fellow AIESEC people. The last couple of Thursdays I've taken the train down to Bonn with Luis to meet some of the trainees there. We went out to a Mexican restaurant one night. Mexican food is really funny here though, it's not spicy in the least, but I think that suited our crowd of primarily Nordic people. We had students from Norway, Finland, Sweden, Latvia and them me and Luis from Canada and Portugal respectively.
The next week some of the AIESEC people from Bonn decided to hold an 'about Germany' presentation for all us foreigners. We met at the university after work and watched a presentation on culture, both traditional and pop, learned a little history and even some traditional children's songs. Then they served us traditional German food, sausages, potatoes in various forms, everything right down to Black Forest cake.
Then there's the language factor. I've been taking my fifteen hours a week of language lessons for a month and a half now, and I'm really starting to pick it up. The only TV show that any of my co-workers watch is Ally McBeal, and they watch it religiously every Tuesday. Until now I've never gone because I wouldn't be able to understand a word, but last week I decided it was time. I was still worried, but after the hour was up, I realized that I had pretty much understood it, and had fun while doing it. I'd already seen the show a handful of times in Canada since Michelle's house used to watch it at school, but I now have the good fortune of already knowing the basic story which helps out a lot too. We'll see how I fair with completely new material in German later....
