Reunification Day (Japanese Style)

October third is the Tag der Deutschen Einheit, Reunification Day, in Germany. Just over a decade ago, a country split in two for a generation was reunited. In memory of that time, the day is a national holiday, and a time for a huge party. At least, that's what I expected. Not a huge party like Canada Day, of course I'd heard that nationalism is generally frowned upon here. But even after living here for four months, I expected more than nothing. Absolutely nothing out of the ordinary happened. No big sales in the shops, they're all closed. It's possible that something happened on television, but as I don't own one, I can only guess. So, spent the day off like everybody else did, as a day off from work. Michelle came down to visit and we made Sushi. Actually, this was an event of note since it was the first time that proper food was ever prepared at 247 Subbelrather St. The AIESEC people who lived there last year were infamous for eating out and keeping a messy house, and Levin and I had only just recently bought cutlery and a fridge. I had to take a picture, my house looked like a hole-in-the-wall restaurant rather than just a hole.
