An AIESECer from Berlin met us at the airport, and drove us into the city. Since we were more than a little late, it was nearly nine o'clock when we arrived and we had already missed the first part of the alumni social night. So, no time to drop the bags off, but straight the to Cuban place that had been chosen for the evening's events. We fought our way into the crowded restaurant/bar which seemed awfully small for the forty plus people that were expected. It was. This was probably business as usual if the walls were any indication. The entire refried bean coloured wall space of the restaurant is covered from ceiling to floor with pen and marker written graphiti. The occasional portraits of Fidel Castro and company served as the only islands of clarity in an otherwise chaotic mass of hand written greetings. We crammed ourselves around a small table by one of the graffiti soaked walls near the door, (Apparently Jimmy had been there before) and ordered nuggets of pure gold laced with cheese. At least, that's what I expected of my nacho plate after looking at the price, and although they were good, I was still disappointed to find ordinary corn chips below my salsa topped dinner. The excellent frozen daiquiris which the bar offered in pitcher form numbed any earlier ill sentiment I had felt and I managed to have a great time talking with my colleagues about life the universe and everything.
